What did I think about this book?
⭐⭐⭐⭐ I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The plot was predictable, but most contemporary romance books have predictable plots. Funny Story was witty it was entertaining. Emily Henry does not get enough credit as an atmospheric writer. She’s able to set the scene and indulge your senses while you’re reading the book is amazing. Henry beautifully describes the scenery, the smells, the feeling, the sunlight, and the very cozy life that the characters lead. I specifically appreciate intimacy, vivid imagery, and the deep, relatable exploration of community and individuality. The nuanced character dynamics evoke a palpable sense of place.
This is a small town, strangers to friends to lover’s romance. I love how each character has depth and a backstory that form them into these dynamic individuals. Henry created an strong and enviable network of people for here characters to rely on during their many highs and lows throughout the novel. Her characters are vividly drawn, with quirks and flaws that render them profoundly relatable. Daphne, with her unique blend of cynicism and vulnerability, provide a compelling narrative voice that guides readers through many comedic and poignant moments.
What did I not like about this book?
Similar to “The Rule Book,” this review of “Funny Story” by Emily Henryboasts a predictable plot. The story is enjoyable, but the plot doesn’t keep you on your toes. In this novel, there are 2 characters falling in like then falling in love. The main character loves her job, but doesn’t love the city and spends much of the book trying to decide whether to stay or go.
I found its pacing uneven in parts. While the narrative occasionally meanders, losing some of its momentum, it always found its way back, thanks to skillful storytelling and sharp humor. Although, this minor critique does little to diminish the overall enjoyment of the novel, making it a must-read for fans of the genre and newcomers alike.
This novel was a favorite and with a 4 star ranking, I think this book is an excellent addition to anyone’s Spring/Summer reading list. I hope you enjoyed this new release book review of Funny Story by Emily Henry.
